How to Start A Capsule Wardrobe

Looking to build your Capsule Wardobe? Everyday Sabbatical is here to help by offering essential tips. From mastering the art of knowing what to mix-and-match to incorporating statement accessories (when necessary), we've got you covered.

What is a Capsule Wardrobe?

A capsule wardrobe is a curated collection of a few high quality clothing essentials in every season. It is the result of a mindful approach to curating your closet and dressing in a way that matches your lifestyle.

How will it impact you?

It will force you to:

  1. Shop Sustainability: A minimalist approach reduces your environmental impact through reduced consumption and not chasing trends

  2. Prioritize Versatility: Interchangeable but significant pieces are key to working well in a variety of settings and occasions

  3. Save Money and Time: This is an investment valued at cost per wear. High-quality, long-lasting pieces will keep you from impulse buying. A capsule wardrobe also makes staring at your closet at the beginning of the day less daunting wondering “What do I wear?”

Before you get started, make room!

  1. Assess the Situation: Make sure you like what you have. I know some people that start the new year by turning all the clothes on their hangers backwards. When you put things back, hang them normally so that by the end of the year it’s clear what you haven’t worn and is taking up valuable real estate.

  2. Dig Deep: Ask yourself what you should keep, sell, donate, or discard. If you think someone else could use it even once, give the piece a second home. There are also plenty of programs that take fabric to recycle. My family does this through Ridwell but I don’t suggest trusting fast fashion retailers like H&M.

  3. Make A Goal: I’ve been ruthlessly decluttering since I read the book Calling in "The One": 7 Weeks to Attract the Love where she said you need to make room for a partner if you want one. The rest of the book is meh but ever since then I always bring more than I take home to clothing swaps and thrift stores. (Bonus: I actually did find the one after this step!)

  4. Pick an Icon: Our forever icon is Keti McKenna of KetiVani but we also love the late, great Iris Apfel. Fashionable Meghan Markel is known to boast a Capsule Wardobe and we are certain she would love the mini turtlenecks on our Everywhere Dresses and Effortless Tops for all seasons. French women can also be your icon. If you haven’t read How to Be Parisian Wherever You Are: Love, Style, and Bad Habits

 Building A Capsule Wardobe

  1. Mix and Match: The fun part is to experiment with a combination of different patterns, textures, and colors to create your unique. Some go for simplicity while others want to always make a statement.  It’s okay to even mix casual with formal pieces if that’s your vibe.

  2. Invest in Versatile Basics: For every new piece you acquire, make sure it’s part of a solid foundation. If you followed the steps above, you’ll need to rebuild your wardrobe with timeless basics that fit you well. Think little black dress (LBD), classic denim jeans, or a tailored blazer. These versatile pieces defy trends. Just remember: Rome was NOT built in a day.

  3. Accessorize Wisely: Elevate even the simplest of outfits with carefully chosen accessories. Whether it's a sleek watch, statement earrings, or our Classic Scarf, accessories add personality and flair to your look.

  4. Remember Tailoring is for Grownups: Take the time to find someone who can make your clothes fit perfectly. A well-tailored garment is a sign of adulthood. Don’t take yourself too seriously but DO find a local tailor and pay them well.

  5. Embrace Your Personal Style: In my twenties I used to joke that I only had two looks: Librarian or College Student. The beauty of gainful employment is eventually you’re able to shape your personal style. Don’t be afraid to lean into what makes you unique. Own your style and wear it with pride.

  6. Confidence is Timeless: The most important accessory you can wear is confidence and luckily as we get older this only improves. When you feel good about what you're wearing, it shows. Looking back at my old photos, that is the one gift I would give my younger self.
